Pygmy African Hedgehog
Atelerix albieventris
Found in Southern Africa, Pygmy African hedgehogs are omnivores. In the wild they would eat insects, a few bits of fruit and vegetables and also any meat they come across. In captivity we feed them a diet of high quality cat biscuit or special hedgehog mixes, we also add small pieces of vegetable and insects.
- Live up to 5 years.
- Live bearing, they have around 4-6 hog lets a year.
- Adults reach around 15 centimetres when fully grown.
- Habitat being dessert.
- Nocturnal mammal.
Crazy Fact
When a hedgehog is relaxed its spines are actually quite soft but when it is frightened or annoyed it will puff into a ball to hide its soft underside and head, the spines will be very hard and sharp.
