Although there are low numbers left in the wilds in the Andes Mountain South America, these are herbivores and are widely kept all over the world as a very popular pet. In captivity we feed them a specially produced dried chinchilla pellet and they also have hay available and the occasional piece of fruit such as apple or raisin
- Live up to 18 years.
- Live bearing, they have around 4-6 kittens a year.
- Adults can reach 30 centimetres when fully grown.
- Habitat being just below the snow line in the Andes Mountain.
- Nocturnal mammal.
Crazy Fact
Chinchillas have the thickest hair of any animal which they need because they live in very cold Andes Mountains. For every 1 hair on our bodies the chinchilla has 60. They have so many hairs that they can’t have water baths (it will clog up their fur), they have to have dust or sand baths.
