Tawny owl
Strix aluco

Found all over Europe, Tawny owls are carnivores and actively hunt mice, voles, birds, even frogs and invertebrates. In captivity we feed them a diet of whole dead mice and chicks. They have short stumpy wings and brown feathers which enables them to blend - camouflage - themselves in their natural habitat.

Crazy Fact

This is the only species of owl which makes the tu-wit, tu-woo call. In fact, its two owls making this noise. The female goes tu-wit and the male goes tu-woo, so if you hear this sound outside it is two owls talking to each other.
