Found throughout western and southern Europe, Fire salamanders are carnivores. In the wild they would eat invertebrates such as earthworms, snails and woodlice.
In captivity we feed them on a diet of insects like crickets and earthworms and also give them the occasional snail.
- Live up to 25 years.
- Live bearing, they give birth to around 25-70 live young.
- Adults reach 20 centimetres when fully grown.
- Habitat being marshes and woodland near water.
- Crepuscular amphibian.
Crazy Fact
Hundreds of years ago people used to think fire salamanders were born from fires. This was because they live in piles of wood that the people used for fires and when this wood was burnt, the salamanders ran out of the flames in pain.
